Claude Tresmontant

Claude Tresmontant is a philosopher, Hellenistic and Hebrew, and a French commentator, born in 1925 and died in 1997.

Claude Tresmontant taught for many years the medieval philosophy and philosophy of science at the Sorbonne. He was correspondent of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences , he received the Maximilian Kolbe in 1973, and the grand prize of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences for lifetime achievement in 1987.

His research focuses on the philosophy of science and the history of Christian thought from its origins in Hebrew. Tresmontant defends the idea of philosophy and metaphysical Christianity. For him, the Hebrew thought, which Christianity inherited, is beside the thought of India, China and Greece, a " phylum "in itself, with its own categories, his vision of time , his morality, his anthropology, his metaphysics, etc..

He also believes that data from current scientific knowledge, especially in cosmology and biology, leading to affirm the existence of God. The question of the existence of God is not therefore covered, contrary to what modern philosophy since Kant at least, belief (in the sense of blind adherence), but of reason. Faith would not be a leap into the absurd, but rather a concurrence of intelligence, as claimed by the majority of believers. It should be noted however, that philosophy should not be compared with the theory of Intelligent Design , insofar Tresmontant do not confuse it with the metaphysical question of the exact sciences.

His Christ Hebrew marks the break with the academic world. Rejected by the threshold , it was finally published by the publisher Franois-Xavier de Guibert. After a retroversion of the four Gospels and in comparing the differences and similarities with the Hebrew language, he eventually concluded that the Greek texts that the translations were (as the guide to translation-Greek Hebraico already used the Septuagint Bible ) Hebrew originals. The scandal was that he put thereby into question the current German exegetical, dominating from the beginning of last century.

For some, despite the undeniable qualities as a translator of Claude Tresmontant his retroversion no evidence that precisely those qualities. Others, however, consider it, along with Father Jean Carmignac, as the great figure of the biblical exegesis of the late twentieth century . Others, like Father Philippe Rolland , fall between these two positions, but sharing its advanced without hesitation to deepen or to rectify . The book remains interesting both for its audacity than garden of Greek and Hebrew roots.

This work was prefaced by ^Bishop John Charles Thomas , the bishop of Corsica. He gave the imprimatur , which created a controversy, so that the French Bishops' Conference changed the rules of allocation thereof ^Bibliography
