/ / Biography

It was, in turn, a professor of dogmatic theology (1957-1968) and Rector of Faculties Dominican Saulchoir (1965-1968), professor of fundamental theology at the EBU (Religious Education Unit) of Theology and Science nuns of the Catholic Institute of Paris (1968-1988), Director of Course of Study PhD in Theology (1973-1974), Professor of Hermeneutics and Theology of Religions (1988-1996) at the Institut Catholique de Paris.

In 1996 he became director of Biblical and Archaeological School of Jerusalem and is a term of three years. Since 1972 he has been visiting professor at several theological faculties: Brussels , Sherbrooke , Freiburg , Quebec , Atlanta , Kinshasa , Ottawa and Yaounde. (See R. Kazadi Kamba, hermeneutics of revelation as a requirement of its own credibility among Rene Latourelle and Claude Geffr, Rome, Pontificiae Universitatis Gregoriannae, 2003, p. 16).

In the contemporary theological scene, Geffr is the proponent of a practice hermeneutics of theology, as he explains in his book Christianity in the interpretation of risk, published in the collection "cogitatio Fidei" which he directed ditions du Cerf in 1970. He proposes to "make it more understandable and more meaningful to today's already established language of Revelation. "

Indeed, fidelity to the testimony of New Testament requires something other than a repetition: a new production at the service of faith alive. In 1985 an important article on "theology of non-Christian religions twenty years after Vatican II" (Muslim Christiana 11) opens a new avenue of research that continues relentlessly since then, trying to interpret the meaning of pluralism religious.

Through his work, also made of numbers articles, conferences and interventions in moments that go well beyond Catholic circles, Geffr trying to "get out the Christian theology of its cultural isolation overcoming, on behalf of the Gospel, false breaks between faith and reason modern ". (See Grard Reynal (ed.) Dictionary of theologians and Christian theology, Paris, Bayard , 1998, p. 206).

In 2007, Claude Geffr was to receive a doctorate " honoris causa "from the Faculty of Theology in Kinshasa, Congo, for all his work. But the Roman Congregation for Education after consultation with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , was vetoed. But this theologian has still received no explanation or request for clarification about his works. In his latest book, From Babel to Pentecost, and its relationship with the Vatican, Geffr said: "I have not had any reaction from the Vatican to publish my book. It is not new because I have already published the substance of this book as articles. Roman authorities could have already reacted. I sometimes invited to Rome in bodies of missionary conference where I spoke to the cardinals, and I said things quite close to the contents of my book. For now I have no problem with Rome. "
