Cathedral of Chania

The Church of Crete is a semi-autonomous jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church canonically attached to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. The primate of the Church carries the title of Archbishop of Crete, with residence in Heraklion. The current incumbent is Archbishop Irenaeus Athanasiadis History

Organization

The Orthodox Church understands the Archbishop of Crete and eight cities:

  • Archdiocese of Crete, based in Heraklion , the archdiocese has 201 parishes.
  • Gortyn metropolis and Arkadie, based in Moirai
  • Metropolis of Rethymnon and Avlopotamos, based in Rethymno
  • Metropolis and Kydonia Apokoronos, headquartered in Chania
  • Metropolis of Lampi, Syvritos and Sfakia, based in Rethymno Spyleo
  • Metropolis Hierapytna and Sitia, sits Hierapetra
  • Herronisos metropolis of Petra, located in Neapolis
  • Metropolis and Kisamos Selinos, sits Kisamos
  • Arkalohorion metropolis, and Kastelio Vianno, sits Arkalokhorio
