The centurion (Latin: in Greek) was one of the degrees of the chain of command the Roman army. However, it is not possible to define the centurions as "officers" in the modern sense.

History

During the first centuries of the Republic (the fifth century BC. the third century BC. ), the legion organized by Cincinnatus is divided into 40 centuries , each consisting of one hundred men. So there are about 40 centurions by legion.
