Catholic Action
The Catholic Action is the name of all the movements created by the Catholic Church in the twentieth century in the context of social Catholicism destined for specific categories of society. Founded in 1924, the Young Christian Workers (YCW) is one of his famous examples.
History and Purpose
The goal of Catholic Action is twofold:
- provide new tools to Christianize or maintain the faith of these environments.
- bring to them the humanistic and social doctrine of the Church.
In Italy, the Italian Catholic Action (1922) is organized by Pius XI in four legs (men, women, young men, young girls) who give birth to the general Catholic Action.
In France, the Catholic Association of French youth (ACJF) was founded in 1886 by Albert de Mun chaired by Henry Savatier. ACJF then splits into specialized training: The Young Christian Workers (YCW, 1927), the Catholic Youth Farm (JAC, 1929), the Young Christian Students (YCS, 1929), the Catholic Youth Maritime (JMC, 1932) and the Independent Christian Youth (JIC, 1935). Each of these formations taking its autonomy, ACJF dissolved in 1956.
The motion is carried mainly by lay people , although supported by theologians and philosophers such as Yves Congar , Marie-Dominique Chenu , Emmanuel Mounier and Jacques Maritain (Full Humanism, 1936). It is moving rapidly to the left of the political spectrum, Mounier, founder of personalism , up to proclaim that " capitalism should be abolished and replaced by an organization socialist production and consumption "(What that personalism?, 1946) List of major Catholic Action - National Catholic Federation (FNC), created by General Edouard de Castelnau in 1924 became the movement of Catholic Action General for Men (ACGH), with the encouragement of Pius XI. General Catholic Action is built on the parish and not mesh with "social environment". General de Castelnau FNC chairs until his death in 1944. She becomes the FNAC, National Federation of Catholic Action, chaired by Jean Le Cour Grandmaison. The movement is then transformed into ACGH, General Catholic Action men.
- Young Christian Workers (YCW) created by a young Belgian priest, the Abbe Cardijn Belgium (1924) and in France (1927).
- Agricultural youth Catholic (JAC) established in 1929, which became the Christian Youth Movement of Rural ( MRJC ) in 1963.
- Young Christian Students (YCS), created in 1929.
- Catholic Youth Maritime (JMC) established in 1932.
- Independent Christian Youth (JIC), established in 1935.
- Valiant souls brave-hearts (1936), which became in 1956 the Catholic Action for children (ACE).
- The Focolare Movement launched by the Italian Chiara Lubich (1944),
- Catholic Action of independent media (AIT), founded in France in 1941 by Marie Louise Monnet, sister of Jean Monnet
- Workers' Catholic Action (COA), established in France in 1950
- International Young Christian Workers (YCW International) founded in 1957
- My neighbor's Gospel Today ( VEA ), General Catholic Action Movement (1975), joint movement resulting from the ACGH
- Christians in rural areas (WRC) that name since 1966. Movement (established in 1939 as the Catholic League Agricole)
- Christian movement of retirees (MCR)
- Christian Movement executives (MCC)
