Casimir Iii Le Grand
Casimir III Piast, called born on 30 April 1309 , died on 5 November 1370 , King of Poland from 1333 to 1370 , son of Ladislaus the Short , king of Poland and Hedwig Kalisz.
Biography
He defeated the King of Bohemia and conquered part of Russia. In 1343, he concluded the Treaty of Kalisz with the Teutonic Order. He reformed the Polish law, founded hospitals, colleges, founded the Cracow Academy (renamed the Jagiellonian University as Ladislaus II Jagiello ) in 1364 , and granted the Jews privileges: it is the prayer of a Jew named Esther, whom he loved, that this concession was made. In 1368 , he adopted his grand-son Casimir IV of Pomerania , who no doubt make his successor on the throne of Poland, despite a succession agreement that was concluded with Louis I of Hungary.
With it goes the dynasty of Piast.
Marriages and children
He married first on 16 October 1325 Anne of Lithuania (1310 1339), daughter of Gediminas , Grand Duke of Lithuania. They were:
- Elizabeth (1333 1361) married around 1342 with Boguslaw V Duke of Pomerania (1318 1373)
- Cunegonde (1334 1357), married 1345 with Louis VI , Duke of Bavaria and Margrave of Brandenburg (1330 1365)
He remarried on 29 September 1341 Adelaide of Hesse ( 1371), but it broke up in 1356 then he married in 1356 but Krystyna a short time since they separated in 1364. Finally he married towards 1365 Hedwig ( 1390) daughter of Henry III Duke of Glogau and Sagan
- Anne (1366 1425), married in 1380 with William, Count of Cilli (1361 1392), then with Ulrich, Duke of Teck ( 1432)
- Cunegonde (1367 1370)
- Hedwig was born in 1368, died after 1407, married around 1382
