Summary

History

The medieval university

The Old Court of Faculties

The University of Toulouse is the second established in France in 1229, after the Sorbonne, founded about 1200. It includes the original four faculties: Theology, Canon Law, Civil Law and Arts (grammar). The Faculty of Medicine will be created in 1257. The Revolution abolished all universities in 1793.

The Faculty of Law of the nineteenth and twentieth century

At the end of the Second Empire , in a general situation of dilapidated and miserable provincial faculties, four universities coexist in Toulouse (Law, Literature, Science, Theology, Catholic). But the only really important is the Faculty of Law, who as under the old regime, including the three-quarter of students and teachers have the most prestigious. Toulouse faculties still show the poverty of higher education in provincial France. It was not until the 1880s and the actions of men like Louis Liard and Ernest Lavisse , which grant greater autonomy to the faculties for the municipality of Toulouse gave the city cultural institutions worthy of its national role.

However, the difficulties arising from the centralization "Parisian" continue to hamper the development of faculties and remain whole when beginning the twentieth century and continue until November 12, 1968. Date of orientation law of higher education, known as the Edgar Faure, who creates a new type of institutions' public institutions of scientific and cultural development "(EPCSC). Moreover, the former faculties disappear and are replaced by units of instruction and research (EBU) packed in the universities. Born in Toulouse and three universities: University of Toulouse I Social Science (Law, Economics and Management), University Toulouse II Le Mirail (Humanities) and University Paul Sabatier Toulouse III (Science and Health).
