These records were discovered in the catacombs of Egypt where once stood the famous city of Thebes, the famous French traveler Lebolo Antonio. He won eleven mummies. There were hundreds of mummies in the same catacomb in such a state of decomposition that they could not move them. Alexandria who left for Paris, Lebolo stopped in Trieste and died after ten days of illness. But before he died, he bequeathed all his property to his nephew, Michael H. Chandler, who was then at Philadelphia, while Lebolo thought he was in Ireland. Therefore, everything was sent to Dublin, the initial address of Chandler. From there, old friends from Chandler did follow the mummies. They arrived at customs in New York during the winter or spring 1833. In April of that year, Chandler paid the customs clearance fees for its mummies and took possession. Until that time, the coffins were not yet open. In the opening, he discovered that for two bodies, something was wrapped in the same kind of cloth, soaked in bitumen. There were two rolls of papyrus. It was discovered on other mummies two or three other small pieces of papyrus, with astronomical calculations, epitaphs, etc..

After the death of Joseph Smith, the Church lost the papyrus. But in 1966, Dr. Aziz S. Atiya, Middle East specialist at the University of Utah, discovered in the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, twenty-two fragments of papyrus that were clearly part of the original collection of Joseph Smith. The papyri were acquired by the Church and are now at the Brigham Young University.
