History

Birthplace of Jesus

The Catholic Church's "Shepherds' Field" in the nearby town of Beit Sahour

The birthplace of Jesus is not known with certainty , and historians are torn between Bethlehem - mentioned by two Gospels , presumably to fit a prophecy of Micah on the origin of the Davidic Messiah - the birthplace and home of Nazareth , where he spent his youth .

These are the gospels of Luke and Matthew that make Bethlehem the birthplace of Jesus. According Stridon Jerome (Epistola, 58, 3), who lived in Bethlehem in the late fourth century , the cave of the Nativity of Christ was already revered time of Hadrian , to prevent such reverence that it was build a temple to Adonis , the Emperor would have done the same in Jerusalem with the Temple and the Holy Sepulchre. If proven in the case of the Holy Sepulchre, the assertions of Christian apologetics are not corroborated by any archaeological evidence on other sites, there is no evidence of habitat and contemporary of Jesus of Nazareth on the site Bethlehem . Moreover, another place of worship of the Nativity / Epiphany of Christ, before the Constantinian basilica seems to have existed , in spite of the allusions apologists Justin Martyr and Origen.

The Jewish archaeologist Aviram Oshri found a town namesake of Bethlehem of Galilee in Galilee , six miles from Nazareth , he speculates that it would be the true birthplace of Jesus, in fact, two recent excavations have revealed traces of contemporary Jewish populations at the time of Jesus, and the sixth century , signs of the presence of a large Christian community and a place of Christian pilgrimage , but this is not sufficient to support his thesis.

Basilica of the Nativity

Main article: Church of the Nativity.

At the peace of the Church, Helena , mother of Constantine I , visited the shrine and his son built the Basilica of the Nativity. Jerome withdrew to a nearby cave and it translated the Hebrew Bible into Latin, in a version known as the Vulgate.

The Basilica of the Nativity was restored by Justinian , and was the only sanctuary untouched by the Persians when they invaded Palestine. It was again restored by the Crusaders , the twelfth century. At the twelfth and thirteenth centuries , his protection was entrusted to the Order of the Temple.
