Berkeley (/ brkli: /) is a city of the Greater San Francisco in California , USA. It is located on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay in Alameda County. The city is known worldwide for its University , the oldest in California, which hosts about 40,000 students and is regularly ranked among the top five worldwide. Before the arrival of Europeans , the territory is occupied by the tribe Chochen / Huichin People's Native American Ohlone. After the expedition of Juan Bautista de Anza, who erected the Presidio of San Francisco at the entrance to the Bay of San Francisco (the "Golden Gate"), one of his soldiers, Luis Peralta, becomes owner of a vast expanse of land on the east coast of the Bay (the "contra costa"), including the future territory of Berkeley. The ranch prospered until the San Antonio Mexican-American War. The change of sovereignty significantly reduces the possessions of the son of Peralta, Domingo and Vicente while the territory begins to be truly colonized.
