The Bar Mitzvah (in Hebrew , ) is an initiation rite in which the boy Jewish mark his majority, in principle at age 13. The female equivalent is the Bat Mitzvah ceremony in which the young Jewish girl coming of age religious in principle to 12 years.

Etymology

Bar Mitzvah is an expression Aramaic which literally means "son of command". Bar means "son" and Mitzvah, usually translated as "good deed" means "commandment." This corresponds to the acceptance of the commandments of God to man.

History

How to celebrate the Bar Mitzvah that is observed today is developed at Middle Age. It did not exist in Biblical times or Talmudic. For boys, the Bar Mitzvah is when it counts as a whole person in the establishment of a Miniane (ten men) for an office group, where he carries the prayer accessories, Talit (prayer shawl) and tefillin (phylacteries). Tradition has it that these "firsts" are subject to specific offices where the boy will replace singer (Baal tefilah) or rabbi (Rabbi) that usually leads to the office synagogue. According to his abilities, he may lead the entire board, or at least read the Torah portion allocated to the week of its majority.

Today Variants

In traditional communities, the religious majority of girls is not subject to any special celebration. They do not read the Torah and only make a speech where they thanked their families. In liberal communities, however, they read it sometimes.
