The peninsula of Baja California is a peninsula in western Mexico. It extends over 1250 km from Mexicali in the north to Cabo San Lucas to the south, separating the Pacific Ocean 's Gulf of California (also known as "Sea of Corts "). It has a total area of 143,396 km 2.

History

The idea of California before the conquest of Mexico by Hernn Corts. It was created by Garci Rodrguez de Montalvo in the late fifteenth century in his book Las Sergas Esplandian of describing the Island of California as follows: Know that right hand of the Indies there is an island called California very close to the edge Garden of Eden and is populated by black women without any man among them, because they live in the manner of Amazons. Having greatly influenced the conquistadors, this idea will lead to a series of expeditions that will explore a vast region stretching from the peninsula of Baja California in Nevada which will bring together under the name California.

Chronology

  • 1532: Hernn Corts sent three ships along the northwest coast of Mexico in search of the Isle of California. They lost all three without a trace.
  • 1533: Hernn Corts made from a relief expedition. During it, the pilot Fortun Ximenez took the lead a mutiny and landed with his men at the site of present La Paz. After Ximnez was killed by Indians , the survivors returned to New Spain , telling women he saw dark-skinned and black beads that seemed to confirm the legend of the Island of California.
  • 1539: Francisco de Ulloa explores the Gulf of California which he named Sea of Cortez and then back along the west coast of the peninsula north of Cedros Island.
  • 1690 - 1700: Colonization of California by the Spaniards.
  • 1804: Division of the Spanish colony of California in Upper and Lower California.
  • 1850: After the annexation of Alta California by the United States, Baja California is divided into territories of North and South.
  • 1853: William Walker made the conquest of La Paz with 45 men and proclaimed the Republic of Baja California where he became president. Lacking support, it must withdraw the face of Mexican resistance. Back in California , he was tried for illegal war, but quickly acquitted by the support of public opinion.
  • 1952: Territoire-du-Nord becomes the 29th state of Mexico.
  • 1974: Territoire-du-Sud became the 31st state of Mexico.
  • 1993: Ranking the World Heritage of Humanity of rock paintings of Sierra de San Francisco and the Whale Sanctuary of El Vizcaino.
  • 2005: Ranking the World Heritage of Humanity Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California.
