The Archbishopric of Ohrid (in Macedonian : ) or autonomous Orthodox Church of Ohrid is a legally independent of the Orthodox Church in Macedonia canonically attached to the Patriarchate of Serbia.
The head of the Church carries the title of Archbishop of Ohrid and Metropolitan of Skopje, with residence in Skopje (present incumbent: John VI / Jovan (Vraniovski)).
Summary |
Archbishop Jovan has been detained between July 26, 2005 and March 7, 2006 to serve a sentence of 30 months imprisonment for "incitement to religious hatred and racial and celebration in a private apartment," and the diversion of 300,000 euros donations from the faithful, used for personal purposes. He was excommunicated from the higher clergy of the Macedonian Orthodox Church for those reasons. The Serbian Orthodox Church, having never accepted the will of the Macedonians have an autocephalous Church since the schism of 1957, then decided to appoint Exarch in Macedonia and thus found a church parallel, which does not recognize Orthodox Christians in Macedonia.
He was again interned August 8, 2006. He was released April 20, 2007. Further talks are underway under the auspices of the Russian Orthodox Church since May 2007.
