The Aqueduct of Valens (in Turkish : is an aqueduct built by the Romans in the fourth century in the European of Istanbul in Turkey.
It was completed in 368 during the reign of Roman emperor of the East Valens ( 328 - 378 ), but was certainly planned and begun under the period of Constantine the Great ( 272 - 337 ) or his son Constantius II ( 317 - 361 ). The aqueduct was built as part of a new supply water to Constantinople. Water from the Belgrad Forest beyond the city was provided by the aqueduct to the city center at Grand Palais near the racecourse. He was serving at the Byzantine period and most of the Ottoman period.
The aqueduct with its double row of arches , stretching across the small valley between two of the seven hills of the city (Fatih and Sleymaniye), was originally along more than 1 000 m high and 26 , 5 m in the middle. The structure, still intact, now has a length of 971 m and a maximum height of only 20 m because the surrounding ground level was raised to 6 m.
Today, it spans the main street of the old city, the Ataturk Boulevard which connects the Atatrk Bridge on the Golden Horn to port Yenikapi, cutting the old city in two along a north-south. The Istanbul municipality has repaired the aqueduct intensively in recent years by replacing the stones cracked. Since early 2007 the aqueduct is illuminated at night with a lighting system LED color-changing.
