Antonello da Messina ( Messina , c. 1430 - id., 1479 ) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance.

Formation and early years

Antonello da Messina is the son of Giovanni Antonio mazonus magister (stonecutter or mason) and Garita (Margherita). In 1457, Antonello works for his own account and in March, he was commissioned an ensign to the Confraternity of San Michele dei Gerbini of Reggio Calabria. In 1460, he returned to Messina.

The Virgin of the Annunciation in the Museo Civico in Como , the Madonna Forti (Venice, private collection) and the Salting Madonna (London, National Gallery ) are the first works commonly attributed to Antonello young. From his earliest works, he says a personality strong enough to absorb external inputs with profit the most varied. Marked by relatively little local tradition, it will always show, in fact, the greatest originality. The evolution of his style reveals a reconciliation with Piero della Francesca.

It shows from the original St. Jerome in his study (1475). He assimilated the principles of perspective Florentine. The purity and brightness of his work, and the firmness of drawing won him considerable prestige.

The Warlord (1474-1476) remains the most energetic portrait, the more voluntary. The balance, scale, rigor, and fullness are served by chromaticism that anticipate the findings of a Giorgione. The Virgin of the Annunciation (c. 1476-1477) is painted in return trip to Flanders, where the meeting with Jan van Eyck himself brings the discovery of oil technique (such an assertion is unfounded, as Jan van Eyck died in 1441. It probably is based on a fictional story by John Diwo). The sober and modern composition make it a major work of the Italian Renaissance ( Abatellis Palace , Palermo ).

Influences

Flemish Painting

Antonello da Messina was one of the first Italian painters to use oil painting that was at the time of the famous Flemish painters. This painting was admired by the kings of Naples , the King Ren to Alfonso of Aragon who owned the largest collection of works by Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden .
