History

Middle Ages

Insofar as the calendar Liturgical was partly determined by the date of Easter , the Catholic Church made a habit of quickly draw up tables showing this date over several years, even centuries. These Easter tables were practicing late books in which the dates of Easter were more or less apart, so some monks were briefly noted the important events of the year. The compilation of these records was initiated by the Irish in the late seventh century : thus were written the Annals of the Four Masters , the Annals of Ulster , the Annals of Inisfallen and Cambriae Annals or Annals of Wales , the One of the oldest sources of the legend of King Arthur. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle also follows the presentation of the year by year.

After being brought to the continent by missionaries, these works were copied, enhanced and maintained, notably in the kingdom of Austrasia. In the ninth century , during the Carolingian Renaissance , the use of these records became usual: just include the Annales regni Francorum (formerly Big Annals of Lorsch ), the Annals of Fulda or the Annals of St. Bertin. The record ended up losing their original style gradually to resemble more and more to chronic , although the use of the term is perpetuated in numerous documents, including the Annals of Waverley.

From the eighteenth century

In modern literature, many works structured more or less annual data have the title of record. The ecclesiastical annals , written by Cardinal Baronius in response to the Historia ecclesiastica (or centuries) of theologians Protestants of Magdeburg , are the most famous example. The use of history has survived the nineteenth century , either to preserve the memory of events year by year (Annual Register, Yearbook of the Revue des Deux Mondes, etc.) or as part of research on the history Medieval (Jahrbcher der deutschen Geschichte, Jahrbcher des deutschen Reiches, Richter's Reichsannalen).
