Anne ( in Hebrew , in ancient Greek ), Anna the prophetess or Anne of Jerusalem is a character in the New Testament , mentioned only in the Gospel according to Luke.

It is a holy Christian celebrated on February 3 .

Anne was a prophetess who prophesied aged about Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem during the episode in his presentation of Jesus in the Temple. It occurs when the prophecy of Simeon. It appears in Luke 2:36-38 :

Anne prophecy:

"There was also a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. It was a great age. After, from her virginity, lived seven years with her husband, she was widowed; reached the age of eighty-four years, she never left the Temple, serving God night and day in fasting and prayer. Occurring at the same time, she began to praise God and speak of the child to all who looked for redemption in Jerusalem. ".

  • she was widowed after seven years of marriage (her husband is not named).

There are several dioceses Catholic communities Prophetess Anne targeting widows over 50 years. The consecration is lived, in continuity with their sacrament of marriage and union with their husbands, as part of an ordinary life, through occupations and family routine.

  • The prophetess Anna is shown as a statue with Mary, Joseph and Simeon on the facade of Chartres cathedral (XIII century).
  • The prophetess Anna is represented on a fresco by Giotto in the Scrovegni chapel in Padua.
