Anastasius Ii (Byzantine Emperor)
Artemios, an official of his state, was chosen to succeed Philippicos on 3 June 713 and crowned emperor Byzantine 4 under the name of Anastasius II.
The first concern of Anastasius was the defense: he immediately began repairing and improving the fortifications of Constantinople and appealed to the supply of the population. He equipped a large fleet and attempted to reorganize the army, but in 715 , his troops of Rhodes revolted and elected Emperor Theodosius III. The troops of the latter took Constantinople in August 715 after a siege of six months, and Anastasius retired to a monastery in Thessalonica.
In 720 he led a revolt against emperor Leo III , who stopped him and put him to death the following year.
