Alta California (Upper California or French) was formed in 1804 when the province of California , then part of the colony Spanish of New Spain , was divided in two along a line separating the Franciscan missions in the northern Dominican missions in the south. The southern part became the territory of the peninsula of Baja California or California Vieja, while the north was the California Nueva. It included the present states of California , Nevada , Utah , Arizona and northern Wyoming south-west ( U.S. ).

Its northern border was set at 42 thparallel in the Adams-Onis Treaty signed in 1819 between the United States and Spain, had to abandon any territorial claims on Spanish Oregon Country.

At independence from Mexico in 1821 , it became a territory of the new nation.
It was ceded to the United States , as in neighboring Santa Fe de Nuevo Mxico , constituting an important part of the Mexican Cession , in signing the Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo on 2 February 1848 , ending the American War- Mexican.
Only a portion of land located east of the 107thmeridian , were incorporated in the State of Texas claimed that since its independence (they do not form part of the Mexican Cession).
