Aldebaran ( Tauri) is the star the brightest of the constellation of Taurus is also the 13th brightest star in the night sky. Its absolute magnitude is -0.63 and the mean apparent magnitude of 0.86. Its name comes from the Arabic al Dabaran () which means follower, referring to the star follows the Pleiades as they race through the night sky.

Visually, Aldebaran appears to be the brightest member of a group of fairly spread out: the mass of the Hyades , which is the cluster closest to the Earth, but in fact Aldebaran is located halfway between Earth and the Hyades and is therefore independent of it.

Summary

Description

Aldebaran is a red giant of magnitude 0.86 and spectral type K5III, which means it is orange, tall and she left the main sequence after using all its hydrogen. Now, it burns primarily of helium and expanded, reaching an approximate diameter of 6.1 10 7km , or about 44.2 times that of the Sun. It has a companion, a red dwarf -type M2, which is difficult to see because of low magnitude (13).

Comparing the size of Aldebaran and the Sun

Because of its large diameter, the surface temperature of the star is low (3400 K). She is distant 65 light years or so. The satellite Hipparcos was located at a distance of 20.0 pc (65.1 s. ) and its luminosity is 150 times larger than the Sun. When considering its magnitude and distance, it is the thirteenth brightest star in the sky. This is a slightly variable star of type pulsating , its magnitude varies from about 0.2 units.

In 1997 , we detected around it which could be a large planet or a small brown dwarf with a mass at least 11 times that of Jupiter and orbiting at a distance of 1.35 AU.

Aldebaran is a star of the easiest to locate in the sky, partly because of its brightness and partly because of its relative proximity to one of the constellations are best known: Aldebaran is the first bright star found in following the three stars of the belt of Orion (left to right in the northern hemisphere and from right to left in the southern hemisphere).

Mythology

Aldebaran is one of the four " royal stars "of the Persians , there are about 5000 years.

Lucifer

In Romanian mythology, this star is equated with Lucifer in the following two expressions Hastur the Unspeakable

In the Cthulhu Mythos of HP Lovecraft (or at least in role-play adaptations of the universe and some news from August Derleth ), the star Aldebaran is home to the great Old Hastur , the King yellow, in his "city" of Carcosa, Hali in the lake. See also
