Alma Redemptoris Mater

Alma Redemptoris Mater is a Catholic prayer dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is one of the four Antiphons Marian and is usually sung during the night. Its title means Holy Mother of the Redeemer in Latin. In the liturgical calendar , it is mostly asked during the Christmas season and the season of Advent until the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary , but it can be recited at will with the Liturgy of the Hours. Herman of Reichenau would have made the eleventh century. For Christians, Mary is the mother of Jesus, who is the Redeemer of humans. Prayer appoints Mary as the "Star of the Sea" and this is one of the etymologies of its name. She also mentions the mercy of Mary, her perpetual virginity and its place as a defender of the Christian people.

In his writings, Geoffrey Chaucer mentions of this prayer. Pope John Paul II wrote an encyclical entitled Redemptoris Mater in 1987.

French

Holy Mother of the Redeemer
Heaven's door is always open,
Star of the Sea
come to the rescue of people who have fallen
and seeks to recover.
You gave birth,
O wonder!
He who created you,
and you remain ever virgin.
Hosts hello
the angel Gabriel
and have mercy on us sinners.

Word for word

Foster mother of the Redeemer
which houses the gate of heaven passable
and the Star of the Sea
courses using
the people who cares to get up.
You who have created, to the surprise of nature,
thy holy begetter.
Virgin before and after
the mouth of Gabriel
Taking this "ave"
sinners, have mercy.
