Allat

Allat (in Arabic : ) was a goddess of fertility and femininity worshiped in Arabia in pre-Islamic times. His name is a contraction of al ilahat goddess. She had her statue in the Kaaba where she was supposed to reside. Herodotus cites Allat (The Aphrodite celestial).

Allat, Manat , and Uzza seem to have been the objects of worship three gods most intense in Mecca. These three goddesses are mentioned in the Quran in Sura The star , this quote is at the origin of the episode of the satanic verses , the Meccans who believed that Muhammad recommended them to adore these three deities. It is said in the Book of idols that Arabs regarded them as "daughters of god" ( Allah in the text). Presumably this was god Hubal , the chief deity of the Ka'ba

It is referred to as Han-'Ilat in inscriptions safatiques. The Nabataeans also made him a cult and identified him to Athena or Minerva , but did, according to Julius Wellhausen , the mother of Hubal.

In the Islamic era, Allat is mentioned in the Koran ( Sura 53:20), and the Book of Idols (Kitab al-Asnam) by Hisham ibn al-Kalbi according to Banu ibn Malik Attaba Thaqif clan was in charge and had built a building. She was revered by all Arabs , including the tribe of Quraysh. Children were above named Zayd Allat-or-Taym Allat. His temple was destroyed and burned by ibn al-Shu bah Mughrah on the order of Muhammad.
