The alif (in Arabic , alif, or simply ) is the first letter of the Arabic alphabet. It symbolizes the One who alone is one which no being precedes being.
In Arabic calligraphy , and particularly in cursive or naskhi, the alif serves module that is to say, the first element by which the size of the other characters is proportionate.
Its value in the Arabic numeration is 1.
