Summary

Etymology

There are two names Ali, very different from one another:

  • The Arabic name "Ali" means "high up". The classical Arabic language allows a distinction between defined Ali (who would be in French, preceded by the article) or Al-Aliyy vocalizing, a name which is only suitable for God, and Ali undefined (which would be preceded by French Article one) or vocalizing Aliyyun a little Ali, "servant of the Great."

The name of Ali begins with the consonant 'ain which is pronounced the back of the throat

The name refers to Ali ibn Abi Talib , son of the prophet of Islam Muhammad and fourth and last of the caliphs of Islam rachidiin. It is therefore very used.

  • The Scandinavian name Ali could have given the family name Alison became in turn name Allison : This is a hypothesis that remains to be verified.

Variants

  • Arabic name in European languages, is written either Ali or `Ali
  • feminine form: form related Alya ( Arabic `aliyah ': very high) is attested in Arabic, and its variant Aalia in Swahili.

Popularity of the name

The name is very popular among Muslims of all ages. First name frequently used in Shiite populations, it remains also among the Sunnis. You can find the name Ali in most countries of Latin America as well as first among Muslims than among Christians, like other Arab names like Leila, etc..
