Count Alfred von Schlieffen ( 28 February 1833 - Berlin , 4 January 1913 ) was a strategist Prussian.
Biography
Son of a Prussian general commander in Berlin, he joined the army in 1854 and then the staff in 1863 and participated in 1866 , as captain of the staff at the Battle of Sadowa.
He participated in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 as commander at the headquarters of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg. From 1876 to 1884 he was Commander of the regiment Ulhans Guard and then worked exclusively for the general staff. In 1884 , he was appointed Head of Department of General Staff. In 1888 he was promoted to quartermaster-general, and therefore representative of the Chief of Staff the Count von Waldersee. In 1891 , von Schlieffen Waldersee succeeds. In 1903 he was general, member of the Higher Council of War. In 1905 , he presented a strategic plan two-pronged offensive, presupposing that the next war would be short, against France , first of all against whom it plans an attack with a pincer movement and a rapid advance towards the west and Russia then.
In 1906 , he is retiring after fifty-three years of service. He was appointed Marshal in 1911. He died in Berlin on 4 January 1913 , nineteen months before the outbreak of hostilities that will implement his plan.
The 3 / 4 August 1914 , despite the changing political and military situation, the military command applies the Schlieffen plan on the Western Front. Some believe that this plan would be able to succeed, but for the rundown on the right flank initiated by his successor, von Moltke.
It is recognized, although the ideas were in vogue, as one of the instigators of the blitzkrieg.
He is buried in the cemetery of Les Invalides in Berlin.
