Alexius V Doukas Mourzuphles
Alexius V Doukas nicknamed Mourzuphles is an Emperor Byzantine death in 1204. The French historian Louis-Pierre Anquetil designates under the name of Alexis said Murtzuphle with big eyebrows.
Born into a noble family, he occupies the office of the Court protovestiaire ; he married Eudoxia Angel, third daughter of Alexius III. It reverses Isaac II and Alexius IV in February 1204 during the turbulent period of the Fourth Crusade.
Became emperor, Alexius V showed a very great authority: he reinforced the walls and towers of Constantinople , strengthened the guard of the city but refused to pay the tribute promised by its predecessors, which angered the crusaders. They seized the city on 12 April 1204. Having unsuccessfully tried to mobilize his subjects, Alexis V fled. He married Eudoxia Angel and then attempted a cons-offensive, that fails. He then sought refuge with her stepfather Alexios III that makes the eyes tear. Separated from his wife and he is fleeing in November 1204 , captured by the "Franks" (that was how the Greeks called all Westerners then) ordered by Thierry de Loos, brought to Constantinople and tried by Baldwin I of Flanders.
