Alexander Archipelago

The Alexander Archipelago in English) is a group of islands along the coast of southeastern Alaska , in North America. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean north and includes some 1,100 islands. This is a dangerous area for navigation also called Inside Passage. The vegetation consists of dense forests and wetlands. The main islands are:
- Chichagof Island ,
- Admiralty Island (Admiralty Island)
- Baranof Island or Sitka Island,
- Wrangell Island ,
- Revillagigedo Island ,
- Kupreanof Island ,
- Dall Island ,
- Prince of Wales.
- Island Etolin
They were first occupied by Native Tlingit and Haida Kaigan. The Tsimshian have arrived on Annette Island in the late nineteenth century. The Russians explored the region from 1741. The islands came under American domination in 1867 when the purchase of Alaska from Washington. The name of the archipelago comes from Alexander Baranov , who was the director of the Russian-American Company , a Russian company prosperous fur trading in the early nineteenth century. Today, the main activities are tourism, fishing and forestry.
The number of islands that form the archipelago, explains why an area that is less than 800 miles long with nearly 29 000 km of coastline, more than 10 000 and 22 128 km estuaries of rivers.
