Alejandro Amenabar is a director , screenwriter , writer , editor , actor , producer and composer Spanish born on 31 March 1972 in Santiago, Chile.

Biography
He was born in Chile in 1972 of a mother Spanish , and a father of Chile. A year after his birth, his parents flee the country following the coup of Augusto Pinochet. He grew up in Madrid , where he enrolled at the Faculty of Science. But he abandoned his studies and devoted himself to his greatest passion: cinema. At age 19 he directed his first short film, La cabeza. In 1996 , his first feature film Tesis , who takes the world of snuff movies in the background, wins first major commercial success. The film caused a sensation at Berlin Film Festival where he opened the following year and won seven Goya Awards including those of Spanish cinema's best film , best "new director" and best original screenplay.
In 1997, he made eye opener , a science fiction film carried by a psychological intrigue. The work was hailed by international critics and several prizes at international festivals, including Berlin and Tokyo , Tom Cruise buys rights to adapt and produce a remake , Vanilla Sky , in which he plays the main role which allows Amenbar shooting his next film, a fantastic work produced by the American star and performed by his then-wife: Nicole Kidman. The Others (The Others and Los otros Spanish), Spanish-American coproduction, is a new global success.
In February 2004 he revealed his homosexuality in a Spanish magazine . In 2005, his film Mar adentro which tells the story of the sailor and writer quadriplegic Ramon Sampedro , received the Oscar for best foreign film after being crowned in Venice , the Golden Globes and Goya , where he received 14 awards (out of 15 nominations ).
In 2009 , he staged Agora , an epic movie based on the life of the Greek mathematician and philosopher Hypatia with Rachel Weisz in the lead role.
