Planning

Housing

Traditional brick home near the Cathedral Sainte-Cecile

Albi were 24,472 housing units in 1999 to 46 500 inhabitants or approximately 2.1 persons per dwelling. The new buildings are poorly represented and the housing stock is quite old, since 65% of primary residences were built before 1974. Constructions prior to 1949 represent 26% of the same park.

89.2% of homes are primary residences spread to 57.2% in detached houses and apartments to 42.8% (respectively 68.2% and 31.8% in the region). Albi has a lot of family housing. 48.5% of residents are homeowners, against 47.5% who were tenants (respectively 58.9% and 35.6% in the region) , .

Note that with 3,083 public housing units or 14.1% of the park in 1999 (8.5% in the region), the city does not comply with the provisions of Article 55 of the Act solidarity and urban renewal (SRU) December 2000 laying down 20% minimum rate of housing units for the larger towns. We may note further that the number of vacancies was quite important in 1999 with 8.4% of the park against only 7.5% in the region.

Most houses have 4 pieces (60.4%), or 3 pieces (18.4%), then 2 pieces (11.9%). Small homes are few (Studios: 9.4%). The city has so large housing because of building space not restricted to large buildings, and because of weak demand in small units , . Finally it should be noted that these units are well equipped as 94.6% have central heating and 64.3% have a garage or parking box (respectively 80% and 66.6% for the region).

Project management

In the early twenty-first century , the city has a large yard beautification. Many public places and many streets have been renovated and refurbished in the city's architectural compliance. Thus, the city has invested in a new cultural space with the media -Pierre Amalric. The place of Vigan in the heart of downtown has been revamped and is now totally pedestrian. The market hall was renovated to become a place of exchange and communication. Finally, the Place Sainte-Cecile has been completely redesigned for the public.

Albi's device is being doubled. It bypasses the east of the city by the major axis leading to Toulouse in the south and Rodez in the north. Since February 2007, work has enabled the development of bridges to the bypass and the development of anti-noise walls. Southern ring road, expressway-Marssac Albi, was developed to join the A68 motorway towards Toulouse. Albi-Marssac section was inaugurated in January 2010. The work should continue in several phases, including at the Lude.

A 10-hectare mall called the "Doors of Albi" in the neighborhood Fonlabour along the ring road with many stores opened September 30, 2009. The buildings are equipped with solar panels and rain collectors .

The construction of an auditorium on the current site of the Friendship between peoples is being considered. This project called "grand theater of Albi" or sometimes "Project Cordeliers' was won by the architect Dominique Perrault . The early work is planned for 2011.

Etymology

One would Alp which is a prefix that means a steep rise or oppidum, while the other source would Albius would have been the name of a prominent Roman who lived in Albi in Roman times , . Another hypothesis is alba (white in Latin) of the limestone cliffs surrounding the city. We also note the spelling (aged) of Alby. (Francization Albi, the "y" does not exist in Occitan ).

Heresy is progressing rapidly and the various missions and sermons of the priests of the Catholic Church does not prevent its growth. The Cathars was violently repressed during the crusade against the Albigenses. The mayor is also the chairman of the urban community of the Albigenses and the secretary of the French Federation of Mayors of towns. In addition, a council of children is formed by 43 students of CM1 and CM2 .

Politically, Albi is a city right since the election of Philip Bonnecarrre in 1995. However, the previous mayor was left and the presidential elections of 2002 and 2007 show a slight preference for the candidates of the left.

In the 2002 presidential election , the first round has seen the head Lionel Jospin with 20.51%, followed by Jacques Chirac with 19.95%, followed by Jean-Marie Le Pen with 14.55% and finally Franois Bayrou with 6.65%, and Jean-Pierre Chevenement with 6.03%, Noel Mamere with 5.91% and Laguiller with 5.06%, no other candidate than the 5% threshold. These figures are below the trend of departmental Tarn (Not to 59.21% Yes 40.79%) showing the rural character of the department and his small town. The electorate has chosen the vote is positive, according to political analysts, the fact of a population more economically privileged and a higher level of education .

In the 2007 presidential election , the first round saw stand out head Sgolne Royal with 29.30%, followed by Nicolas Sarkozy with 26.95%, Franois Bayrou with 18.78%, Jean-Marie Le Pen with 10 , 58% and Olivier Besancenot with 3.94%, no other candidate than the 2% threshold. The second round has seen the top Sgolne Royal with 50.71% (National: 46.94%) against 49.29% for Nicolas Sarkozy (national score: 53.06%) . The victory in the first round and second round left in Albi indicates that city residents tend to favor left-wing policies.
