Albert Roussel was a French composer born in Tourcoing on 5 April 1869 and died in Royan on 23 August 1937.

Biography

A family member of the industrial bourgeoisie Tourquennoise in which there are several good talent level, Albert Roussel his secondary education at the Free Institution of Sacred Heart of Tourcoing. Orphaned at the age of seven, he was raised by his grandfather, mayor of the city, then by his maternal aunt. Reading the novels of Jules Verne decides to become a sailor. So he joined the College Stanislas in Paris , where the organist Julius Stolz he discovered Bach , Beethoven and Mozart.

After serving some years in the Navy (he had been admitted to the Naval Academy in 1887), he decided in 1894 to devote himself entirely to music. Julien Koszul, grandfather of Henri Dutilleux , gave him lessons in harmony in Roubaix and encouraged him to go to Paris to study with Eugene Gigout. He enrolled in 1898 at the Schola Cantorum. He himself taught counterpoint between 1902 and 1914, counting among his pupils Guy de Lioncourt , John Henry, Lucien Lambotte Marcel Orban, Paul Le Flem , Roland-Manuel , Stan Golestan , Ladislas of Rohozinski, Erik Satie , Edgard Varese. After the war he continued to teach privately, just ask his advice: Bohuslav Martinu , Emile Gou , Jaroslav Kricka , Hans Krasa , Julia Reisserova, Josef Plenek , Piotr Perkowski, Pedro Petridis, Conrad Beck, Brero Cesare, Luigi Cortese, John Martinon , Jacques Leguerney Joseph Vals, Jorgen Jersild, Knudage Riisagger Suzanne Rokseth Alexander Voormolen, etc.. His influence on young musicians of the interwar period who regarded him as a leader is crucial.

Although influenced early in his career by Debussy and Vincent d'Indy , Roussel quickly showed great originality. His music is distinguished by the sophistication of harmony, rhythmic daring and rich colors. He left among other songs , music room, various pieces for piano, two concertos (for piano and cello), four symphonies (the third, in G minor, is considered one of the masterpieces of work of its kind), the ballets The Spider's Feast , Bacchus and Ariadne and Aeneas. The opera-ballet Padmavati and symphonic triptych with soloists and chorus Evocations were inspired by his honeymoon in India.

Roussel died at Royan as a result of a heart attack. He is buried in the small cemetery Varengeville-sur-Mer , near Dieppe, Seine-Maritime. He lived at No. 2 Square Gabriel Faure in the 17th arrondissement of Paris from 1929 until his death.
