Albert Reville (1826 1906)
Albert Reville, born in Dieppe on 3 November 1826 and died in Paris on 25 October 1906 , is a French theologian, biblical exegesis and specialist on religious history and in the mainstream of liberal Protestantism.
Biography
After studying at Geneva and Strasbourg , he became in 1851 Reformed pastor at the Walloon Church in Rotterdam ( Netherlands ), where he remained until 1872. In 1880 he was appointed professor at the College de France , where he holds the first chair of history of religions. It was at its inception in 1886, the first President of the Section of Religious Sciences of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. He is the founder of the Journal of the History of Religions.
Albert Reville is the father of Jean Reville , who succeeded him at the College de France, and the grandfather of Albert Reville , who was mayor of Reims.
