Summary |
In 500 , Alaric lives in Arles where he holds court, where he hosts sent Gondebald , a Gallic aristocrat Aridius, and form an alliance with the Burgundian king then besieged in Avignon , in the conflict between the latter and his brother the Franks , but in fact he wants to annex the Gothic part of Gaul.
The defeat of Alaric could be explained by the fact that the Visigoth king probably did not have the completeness of its elite troops, or the entire heavy cavalry Visigoths, who had been sent to Spain. Indeed, Alaric Visigoth settlement had begun in northern Spain since the year 490. To address the lack of men, he had enlisted many Gallo-Roman pro Visigoths, including Arverni , but few experienced and combative. In addition, the reinforcements Ostrogothic promised by Theodoric , did not come, stuck in Italy due to risk of attack Byzantium.
