He studied at the Lille School Faidherbe in Paris at the Lycee Janson de Sailly before joining the faculty of law. Very quickly he became interested in history and took courses at the Sorbonne. He published his first papers in 1946 and his second book Letizia: Napoleon and his mother is rewarded by the French Academy.

In 1951, he created for radio The Tribune Story , broadcast until 1997 (with Andr Castelot and Jean-Claude Colin-Simard , and Jean-Franois Chiappe ). In 1957, he created for television (with Stellio Lorenzi and Andre Castelot) The camera explores the time , which will continue until 1966.
