Summary |
His father, Raymond Badiou , Ecole Normale , a mathematics teacher in preparatory classes , resistant SFIO , was mayor of Toulouse from 1944 to 1958 before resigning and joining the Socialist Unity Party (PSU), to whose creation he participated (in 1958 ) before rallying his party at De Gaulle.
Alumnus of the Ecole Normale Superieure , cacique of the aggregation in philosophy in 1960 , Alain Badiou teaches first in high school (while working occasionally with the ENS), then at the Faculty of Letters of Reims (University College Literary ).
Activist in the Socialist Unity Party (PSU), then led by Michel Rocard , he participated with Emmanuel Terray , a focus group claiming to Marxism-Leninism and denouncing the "right opportunism" of various currents within the party , Maoist.
Since its inception, he joined the staff of the University Centre Experimental de Vincennes (year 1968 - 1969 ). It contributes to the development of the university (now Paris-VIII , moved to Vincennes in Saint-Denis) for thirty years. In Vincennes, Deleuze mocks his "Bolshevism", while Badiou is rather on the side of Lacan , accused by Deleuze and Lyotard Stalinism .
He became a professor at the Ecole Normale Suprieure in the Rue d'Ulm in 1999 and professor emeritus at that institution.
He was also program director at the College International de Philosophie.
Heavily influenced by Louis Althusser in his early work epistemological , it uses the math , the only way, he said, deploying the ontology.
Besides his activity as a philosopher, Badiou is novelist and playwright , which led him to work with directors such as Antoine Vitez or Christian Schiaretti. Meanwhile, it performs a work which the publisher has launched his friend Francis Wahl : it has long co-edited with Barbara Cassin 's series "philosophical" to Seuil. After leaving the threshold due to a conflict of editorial policy, Cassin and Badiou continue their philosophical collection, now entitled "Openings" in Fayard .
Among its other responsibilities, Badiou anime "Conferences of the parrot and participates as a life member at the Academy of Philosophy in Brazil.
His life and his work can be divided into two parts. However, Alain Badiou himself totally rejects this dichotomy .
Philosophy
On the one hand, his work in philosophy itself, the most important are Being and Event (1988), followed in 2006 Logic worlds. Being and Event 2. He supports the thesis that the ontology (theory of being) is identical to mathematics and, more specifically, set theory, and phenomenology (the study of degrees of appearance and the event) is indistinguishable from the logic that combines the theory of topoi. One of the major theories that emerge from these texts is that, in terms of being, nothing belongs to oneself (a consequence of the axiom of foundation ) and the event is only possible if precisely such a self-belonging. Consequently, the event is not. Also noteworthy, pell-mell, his concept of "democratic materialism" (there are only bodies and languages), opposite to that of "dialectical materialism" (there are only bodies and languages , if there are truths), his apprehension of being, and not as a multiple one, his theory of Lacanian subject, its operating forcing of Paul Cohen in an original conception of truth, the four anchors its theory: love, art, politics and science, ...
These two texts are developing a type of metaphysical system that is both traditional, its inclusiveness and synthetic, and again, through its integration of contemporary mathematical theories, such as Gdel's constructible, the "forcing" of Cohen, the internal logic of topoi etc.. It participates, perhaps reluctantly, to the revival of metaphysics, in which there is, moreover, in the world of analytical philosophy.
Demanding works, we will address the main concepts more easily "badiousiens" by reading the first book conditions, with a preface by Francois Wahl , or three short volumes of Abstract metapolitical, Concise Handbook of unsightly and Short Treatise ontology transitional published in 1998.
Political involvement
Activist politics, Badiou was a leader of the Maoist French (militant to UCFML ), like other famous ENS ( Benny Levy , Guy Lardreau , the linguist Jean-Claude Milner , the Lacanian Jacques-Alain and Gerard Miller which, themselves, argued the proletarian Left , etc..). It then denies almost nothing of this legacy. Alain Badiou considers that phenomena such as the Gulag and the Cultural Revolution should not drive on communism, to "throw the baby with the bath water" and that "Today, democracy is nothing other than a propaganda tool of capitalism .
In January 1979 he protested against the 'invasion of Cambodia by Vietnamese one hundred and twenty thousand "and will defend Pol Pot and his fellow Khmer Rouge .
Since 1985 he acts as the secretariat of the Political Organization </ ref> with Sylvain Lazarus and Natacha Michel. They defend the workers' cause illegal aliens homes .
This activism is part of its philosophy, indicated by several of his recent books: Ethics, the series of circumstances (I, II, III, IV and V) , which speak of terrorism or the French presidential election of 2002 , most recently The Age, and as a result of Being and Event, Logics of Worlds, March 9, 2006.
Believing that philosophy must speak of his time, Alain Badiou, like most thinkers Continental of his generation, fought the idea that philosophical problems are eternal questions, asked by everyone in a similar manner. Finally, it is a critique of postmodern philosophy or of parliamentary democracy in the name of democracy restored to "its original meaning: the existence of peoples, conceived as power over themselves . He considers 2008 "the word" communism " .
