The Alagoas is a state of Brazil 's coast from the Northeast. Its capital Macei.

Geography
Situation
The Alagoas covers an area of 27,731 km 2, making it one of the smallest states.
It is bordered to the north and northeast by the State of Pernambuco , on the east by the Atlantic Ocean , south by the State of Sergipe and south-west by the State of Bahia.
Relief
The relief is low, generally below 300 meters. It consists of a plain shoreline , a plateau in the north and a depression in the center. The culmination of the state is squeezed Santa Cruz with 844 meters.
Hydrography
The main rivers of the state are the rio So Francisco , the Mundau rio and rio Paraba do Meio.
Climate
To the east and the coast, the climate is tropical humid. To the west and in the interior, the climate is semiarid.
Vegetation
On the coast, there are still some remnants of rainforest and mangroves. The semi-arid interior of the state is the area of caatinga. Between the two lies the forest zone, covered with Atlantic forest.
Population
With a population of 3,037,103 inhabitants in 2007 , Alagoas is more densely populated than the national average.
The capital, Macei , is also the largest city in the state. Then there are the municipalities of Arapiraca , Palmeira dos Indio , Unio dos Palmares and Rio Largo.
The Alagoas has a small indigenous population, dispersed among various ethnic groups. The native settlements are located mainly in central and west of the state.
History
Until 1817 , Alagoas was part of Pernambuco and followed his story. He was separated after the failed revolution what was the Brazilian government organized a independent. He became, in 1822 , a province of the new Brazilian government.
In 1839 , Macei replaces Marechal Deodoro as its capital.
Until 1960 , Alagoas has maintained its colonial characteristics: the company depends on the rich and great families. After that date, a modernization effort brought the exploitation of rock salt and oil. Tourism is also straightforward progression.
