Biography
He lived in the courtyard of the Emir Adud ad-Daula in Isfahan in Persia. He translated works and developed in Greek dealing with astronomy , especially the Almagest of Ptolemy. He is responsible for several improvements catalog stellar Ptolemy and his estimates of brightnesses and apparent magnitudes of stars frequently differ from those of Ptolemy.
He discovered the Large Magellanic Cloud is visible in Yemen , but not in Isfahan: the first European to gaze was Magellan during his trip to the 16th century.
It seems to be the first to have observed the Andromeda galaxy M31.
It was a great translator of Arabic astronomy ancient Greek whose center was Alexandria , the first to attempt to match the traditional Arabic and Greek names of stars and constellations that do not overlap.
He noticed that the plane of the ecliptic was inclined to the celestial equator and he calculated more accurately the duration of the tropical year. He observed and described the stars, their position, apparent magnitude, color, traversing the sky constellation by constellation. For each of them, he drew two sketches: The constellation seen from outside the celestial globe, then the same view from inside the celestial globe, as it can be observed from the surface of the Earth. Al Sufi found many innovative uses of the astrolabe.
Al Sufi published his famous Book of Fixed Stars in 964 , which includes most of his work as illustrated texts.
The crater Azophi on the Moon named after him.
On 24 September 1960 Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld & Tom Gehrels discovered a minor object they call (12621) Alsufi.
