Adelphopoiia
The adelphopoiia is in the Byzantine Empire the adoption as a brother or sister of a person outside his family. The adelphopoiia is considered a spiritual relationship between two people, created by the prayers of a ritual. It was however not recognized by canon law or civil law. It was used to confirm a friendship and was an obligation of aid and mutual support. It could be used to build up a clientele.
