Abu Yaqub Yusuf An Nasr
Abu Ya `qub Yusuf an-Nasr ( Arabic : , Abu Yusuf Ya `qub An-Nasr) ( Nasr, was born on an unknown date. Son of Abu Yusuf Ya `qub , succeeded him without difficulty in 1286 as Sultan Merinid. He died in 1307.
History
Abu Ya `qub Yusuf an-Nasr had to face numerous revolts that show the state Marinid was still fragile. Having told one of his brothers a troop to quell a rebellion, the latter instead of fighting, the rebel alliance to overthrow the sultan. Then it was another parent who rebelled, then it was a son of Abu Ya `qub Yusuf (1288). Four years later, the tribe Beni Wattas in revolt. The rebellious son who had fled to Tlemcen reiterated his vain attempt.
He left aside the Spanish , intervening only forced by events. In 1291, Don Sancho of Castile broke the peace treaty signed in 1285. Allied to the Castilian Nasrid of Granada against the Merinids. The Castilians provided men and Nasrid funding. Tarifa which belonged to Merinids was besieged for four months by Don Sanche. The city surrendered in September 1291. Sancho keeps his place despite agreement with Nasrid. Mohammed al-Faqih was leading a seesaw between the two potential enemies, the mrinides and Castilian. He casts his alliances and starts on the side of the Castilians Merinids cons. Abu Ya `qub Yusuf tired of the turnovers of Mohammed al-Faqih requires him to pay the price. As the price of this alliance, Abu Ya `qub Yusuf received one of four copies of the Koran that the Caliph Uthman had had drafted and that the Umayyads had brought from Damascus to Granada. Abu Ya `qub Yusuf laid siege to Tarifa but it was a failure.
The Abdalwadides Tlemcen are a bigger problem because they represent a direct threat. They had welcomed the son of felon in Abu Ya `qub Yusuf. Tlemcen was threatened several times until 1299 when he laid siege to the city with the intention of taking it at all costs. The siege lasted, during this time a rival Merinid took Ceuta. Finally Abu Yusuf Ya `qub was assassinated by a eunuch for an obscure case of harem ( 1307 ).
