Abu Dhabi, also spelled Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi , is the capital of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and United Arab Emirates .

Although there are traces of civilization several thousand years before our era, the area has been inhabited continuously until the eighteenth century. But it is the twentieth century the city has experienced significant growth, thanks largely to revenue from oil .

Today, the city has nearly 600,000 inhabitants. It is the central policy and industry of UAE , and a central cultural and commercial importance in the Persian Gulf , because of its capital position.

Origins

Before being called Abu Dhabi, the region was called Milh, which means salt in Arabic , probably because of the abundance of this resource .

Abu Dhabi means "Father of Gazelle ", and its first use dates back over 300 years. The origin of the name having been transmitted from generation to generation through the poems and legends , it is difficult to know the true etymology . Some legends tell that the name was given by a man who hunted gazelle and would have received this nickname. Others say the name of the town was originally Umm Dhabi, is the "mother of the gazelle", due to the large number of animals living there.

Spelling

The spelling of the word in French is subject to different interpretations, since it is a transcription of Arabic. Thus, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi spells , while the Interinstitutional style European commission and the names of the IGN agree Abu Dhabi .

The English-speaking countries generally agree on Abu Dhabi .

Location

The city of Abu Dhabi is located on the coast in the northern emirate of Abu Dhabi in the UAE. It is a coastal town overlooking the Persian Gulf.

Originally stationed on island shaped "T" that juts into the Persian Gulf , it now extends into the desert of Rub al-Khali , on the Arabian Peninsula. Land are also reclaimed from the sea by the construction of artificial islands in sand.

Climate

Abu Dhabi enjoys a climate arid subtropical with fine weather throughout the year.

The summer months are from May to September, with temperatures varying between 30 and 51 C and can sometimes reach over 55 C during the months of July and August. The moisture in the air is also very high, these temperatures cause a significant hardship . The winter months from October to April, show temperatures around 24 C.

The rains are rare and scarce in Abu Dhabi, and only occur from November to April .

This table provides a record of temperature and precipitation in Sharjah , but weather conditions do not differ significantly from the city of Abu Dhabi .

History

The city of Abu Dhabi was founded in 1791 by the tribe Bedouin of the Bani Yas headed Chakhbut Dhiyab bin. They retreated in the region, fleeing the Wahhabis of Najd , which extended their territory.

Demographics

According to the latest official census in 2005 , Abu Dhabi had 562 425 inhabitants, and estimates indicate approximately 600 000 inhabitants in 2010 .

Economy

The city of Abu Dhabi is the capital of UAE since 1971. It features an international airport and an airport, Bettina , mainly for military use, a university , and industrial zones , etc.. She also has a very large mosque recently, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque.
There are several shopping centers, including the largest, the Al Wahda Mall and Marina Mall , contain nearly 144 stores in the first and 160 for the second .

Architecture and monuments

Found in the center of many skyscrapers and other buildings, the oldest, with a size smaller. Most streets are extremely wide (they each have at least four lanes, two in each direction), some were in the middle of lawns, watered each night by sprinklers automatic.
Besides the shopping malls and offices, Abu Dhabi has several notable buildings or places, the most famous are the five star hotel and the Emirates Palace Corniche highway paved with ceramic facing the sea
Large villas are present on the outskirts of the city.

Transport

An international airport connects the city to the world. Sea side, an industrial port handles the freight and oil. In the interior, some bus lines connecting various points, but the means of transport is the most common taxi or car when it has one.

Culture

The museum projects in Abu Dhabi, such as the Guggenheim, the Louvre Museum and the Sheikh Zayd, comprehensive arts centers as ADACH. Museums have a conservation function of heritage, but also production of artists of the Arab world and internationally. Zaha Hadid builds the center of the performing arts (dance, theater ...). The Louvre Abu Dhabi is being built by Jean Nouvel.
