Abu Bakr Ibn Umar

Abu Bakr Ibn Umar (in Arabic : ) also known as Abu Darda (died circa 1088) was leader of the Almoravids. It is also the father of Ahmed Omar Abu Bakr Ibn better known by the name Ndiadiane Ndiaye , founder of the empire of Djolof and regarded as the ancestor of Wolof. He is from the tribe Berber of Lemtuna , part of the confederation Sanhadja.

In 1054, it is Emir of Adrar Mauritania and takes the city of Aoudaghost to the empire of Ghana. In 1056, Abdallah Ibn Yasin appointed to head the armies Almoravids. In 1057, he captured the Souss and Aghmat, south of Morocco today. After the death of Ibn Yasin in 1059, Ibn Omar became head of the Almoravids. He was victorious in the emirate of Barghwata and sent an army north under the command of his cousin Yusuf ibn Tasufin as he returns to West Africa in 1061.

In 1076 he captured Kumbi Saleh , the capital of the empire, and imposes the Islam in the region. It will tolerate the insubordination of Ibn Tashfin, who conquered Al-Andalus , and thus prevents the collapse of the kingdom.

Abu Bakr Ibn Umar died in 1087 or 1088 in Senegal , killed by the poisoned arrow of an archer Soninke.
