Abu al-Mutarraf al-Nasir li-Din Allah Abd ar-Rahman ibn Muhammad ( Cordoba , January 7 891 - Madinat al-Zahra , 15 October 961 ) was Emir and Caliph Umayyad Cordoba.
He is the son of Muhammad, Umayyad prince died before his father `Abd Allah. He was born in 889. He succeeded his grandfather `Abd Allah as emir Umayyad Cordoba in 912. It reconstructs a unified state from 917 and representative of the Muslim orthodoxy, he decided to finally overcome the political and religious authority in Baghdad by granting themselves the title of caliph ( 929 ), Amir al-Mu'min ( "prince of believers") and al-Nasir li-Din Allah ("the victory for the religion of God"). He died 16 November 961 at Cordoba. His son Al-Hakam II succeeded him.
Her paternal grandmother was Onec Fortune, daughter of King of Navarre Fortun Garces and one of the wives of Muhammad bin Abd Allah. His mother, Muzna or Muzayna was itself a concubine Christian Muhammad.
Biography
It transforms and beautifies Cordoba and fixed his residence at Madinat al-Zahra , a city created for its favorite Zahra eight kilometers from Cordoba. It maintains good relations with Jews and Christians. Its adviser and friend Recemundo , bishop of Cordoba, "Rabbi Bin Zaid." The Caliph took to heart to call himself the councils. His doctor is Jewish Sephardic Hasdai ben Shatprut , both philosopher and poet, and diplomat of the Caliph.
In 932 , he took Toledo after a siege which has inflicted a terrible famine to the people. The caliphate then enters a period of peace and prosperity.
From 950 , he has authority over the Maghreb from Tangier to Algiers and faces attacks by the Fatimids. In 955 , his ambassador Hasdai ben Shatprut get a peace agreement with King Ordoo III of Asturias and the Duke of Castile.
Under his reign, the Great Mosque of Cordoba is again converted (reconstruction of the minaret , in particular). His court welcomes intellectuals, poets, musicians and artists, Jews, Muslims or Christians.
At his death in 961 , the Caliphate of Cordoba is at its peak. Cordova probably has a million inhabitants and is with Baghdad and Constantinople one of the three largest cities in the world.
