The abbey of Saint-Ruf of Avignon is an ancient religious settlement located partially destroyed the Mill Avenue Notre-Dame in Avignon. The remains of the abbey have been classified as historic monuments by list of 1887 History

The abbey of Saint Ruf was the seat of an order of canons regular of St. Augustine developed in the late eleventh century from a place of worship on the outskirts of Avignon , poorly documented until its sale in 1039 to four clerics, who want to "live religiously", by Benezet , bishop of Avignon.

Archaeological excavations have shown that the site of the abbey in Avignon was originally that of a cemetery early Christian. But the exact figure of the saint is not assured: his qualification as the first bishop of Avignon, his identification with the son of Simon of Cyrene , traditions are developed with the rise of the order .

Abbey, backed by the papacy Gregorian and the Counts of Barcelona , becoming the twelfth century, a hotbed of reform canonical, whose customs are experiencing diffusion "European" (Southern France, Iberian Peninsula, Scandinavia, Southern Germany , etc..). This radiation is doubled by the construction of a religious order of magnitude lower, which explains why it is neglected by the historiography.

The headquarters of this order, however, was moved to Valencia , following differences with the cathedral chapter of Avignon. The site of the old Abbey became the seat of a priory rufinien simple, quickly annexed to the special revenue of the abbots of Saint-Ruf.

In XIV century , it nevertheless meets two provincial councils in 1326 and 1337 , chaired by the chamberlain of John XXII , Gasbert Valle , Archbishop of Arles.

The existence of the order issued the cult of the saint outside the diocese of Avignon. We find the consecration of places of worship dedicated to St. Ruf Valencia , Lleida , Romans , Montpellier.
