- February : In his fourth expedition in Italy , Charlemagne took Capua and sends an army against the Duke of Benevento Arichis , who fled to Salerno. Arichis is reduced to obedience and gives his son Grimoal hostage to the Frankish king. Since the departure of the troops of Charlemagne, Arichis concluded an alliance with Byzantium , after which it must receive the title of patrician and representing the Eastern Emperor in Italy and Rome .
- April 8 : Charlemagne spent the Easter holidays in Rome .
- Spring : Out of Engagement Rotrude (daughter of Charlemagne) , with the Eastern Emperor Constantine VI .
- July 13 , Worms : Willehad (de) is consecrated bishop with authority over the country Saxon and Frisian . Founding of the diocese and the city of Bremen on the Weser. Beginning of the period covered by the Chronicle of Adam of Bremen.
- September 24 - October 13 , Nicaea , in the Byzantine Empire : The Second Council of Nicaea (Seventh Ecumenical Council) convened by Irene condemns the iconoclasm. It regulates the discipline of clergy, monks and lay people .
- Charlemagne does not recognize all the clauses of the Nicene Council and Load theologians (which probably Theodulf Orleans ) to compose a series of treaties ( Libri Carolini (en) ) against the council. He sent an ambassador to Rome in charge of presenting the pope remonstrated 85. The Libri Carolina, published in 791 , say that this is indeed a mistake to destroy the icons, but it is one also to impose their veneration .
- October 3 : Tassilo III of Bavaria renews his oath of allegiance to Charlemagne in Lechfeld, near Augsburg .
- Tassilo III, Duke of Bavaria , sent an embassy to the pope asking him to engage in a mediation with Charlemagne , then to Rome. Adrian replied that having sworn allegiance to Charles, he must obey without question, under penalty of excommunication. The king of the Franks, returned home, after Tassilo to appear before him immediately. Tassilo refuses to obey, and Charles is accused of infidelity and march on the territory with three Bavarian armies. The war is avoided when the Duke agrees to submit and surrender to Charles thirteen hostages, including his son.
- October 23 : Meeting of the fathers of the Nicene Council in the palace of Magnaura to Constantinople to announce its decision by Irene and Constantine VI. Restoring the unity of the Church and the worship of icons .
- Failure of the first Norman invasion of England .
