- In India , the Chalukya Vinayaditya succeeded his father Vikramaditya I (completed in 696 ). He reigns in peace, receiving tribute from the Pallava dynasty and South Middle East
- April 18 : Yazid I. , was proclaimed caliph in Damascus at my death of his father Mu'awiyya (end of reign in 683 ) .
- October 10 : Al-Husayn , son of Ali, was killed in action at the Battle of Karbala in Iraq. This massacre causes the final break between the Shiites and the Umayyad .
- Revolt in Medina after the death of al-Husayn: 'Abd Allah ibn Zobair , nephew of Aisha was proclaimed caliph in Medina by Kaysites outraged by the killing of al-Husayn. An army from Medina and Damascus is besieged Mecca where the Ka'ba is burned. The seat is lifted to the death of Yazid. His brother Mu'awiyya II succeeded him but died of plague ( 683 ). The Kalbides (en) denote Marwan submitting one by one the enemies of Damascus , Umayyad dynasty saving.

October 14 : Wamba renounces the crown, oil on canvas by Juan Antonio de Ribera, 1819- Pepin of Herstal becomes Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia after the death of Dagobert II in December 679. He invaded Neustria at the beginning of the year but was defeated by Ebroin to Latofao (Bois du Fay, near Rethel or Laffaux , between Soissons and Laon ). His brother Martin was killed .
- March 27 : Opening of the Council of Rome convened to prepare for the fall of Constantinople .
- May 15 : Ebroin , mayor of the palace of Neustria , was assassinated and replaced by Ermenfroi Waratton then Berchaire , son of Waratton.
- October 14 : At Toledo , the King Visigoth Wamba was ousted by the Count Ervige .
- November 7 : Opening of the Sixth Ecumenical Council of Constantinople III condemning monothelitism and restores religious orthodoxy. The Byzantine Empire is close to the West but abandons the people and Monophysite monothelitism torn eastern provinces by the Arabs (ending 16 September 681 ) .
- The Bulgarians of Isperik arrive in the Balkans. They spend the Danube and settle in Moesia and after defeating a treaty imposed by the Byzantines .
- The Eastern Emperor Constantine IV recognizes the Lombard conquests in Italy .
- No bishop referred to Nimes from 680 to 788 .
- Back from Rome to be reinstated in his diocese, Wilfrid of York was jailed for nine months by the King of Northumbria Ecgfrith. After his release, he devoted himself to baptize the last pagans in Sussex and the Isle of Wight (681-686) .
- Bonitus was appointed prefect of Marseilles by Thierry III .
